Chin Implants

What is Chin Augmentation (Implant) surgery?
Chin augmentation using surgical implants can alter the underlying structure of the face, providing better balance to the facial features to improve facial harmony. A chin implant can change the appearance of a receding chin by increasing projection. It can also balance a face by making the chin longer compared to the nose.

What are chin implants made from?
There are several manufacturers of chin implants. For the most part they are an inert solid silicone rubber material.  This material is safe and has been used for many years.

How is chin augmentation surgery performed?
To augment the chin, the surgeon begins by making an incision either be through the mouth or an extended incision under the chin. The risk of infection is generally higher if an incision is placed within the mouth area, although a strict post-operative oral hygiene regime can decrease this risk. Upon consultation Dr. Sullivan will determine the appropriate method for you.

Will there be scarring?
The external incision is placed in a natural skin crease under the chin. The resulting scar is very well hidden.

When will I be able to see the results?
The results are immediate.  Patients are usually very satisfied with their results although it may take time getting used to the your new appearance.

How do I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you are considering, one of the most important factors in your satisfaction is the surgeon you choose. Make sure your surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This ensures that your surgeon is specialized in facial procedures. Make sure your procedure is done in an accredited facility. Ask how often your surgeon performs the procedure in question. The more you know about your surgeon and the procedure the more likely you will have a successful outcome.
