What is a Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is an enlargement of one or both breasts in men. It occurs most commonly around the time of puberty.
What causes Gynecomastia?
There is a belief that the condition may be caused by hormonal imbalance, medication with estrogen or steroidal compounds, or failure of the liver to inactivate circulating estrogen.
How is Gynecomastia corrected?
In some cases, Gynecomastia will resolve spontaneously. Often times, surgery is used for cosmetic or psychological reasons. Choices for treatment for Gynecomastia depend on several factors. If the Gynecomastia is drug-induced, discontinuance of the agent may be all that is needed. Your board certified plastic surgeon may recommend surgical removal of the breast tissue through the use of liposuction.
Will there be significant scarring?
Because the incision is made around the nipple where the skin naturally changes, there is minimal scarring from surgery to correct Gynecomastia. Any visible scarring will fade over a twelve month period.
How should I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon if she is certified by The American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASPRS). Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
