Lesion/Mole Removals

What is a mole?
A mole or nevi is generally a dark growth on the skin. It sometimes can be raised and irregular. Some moles may be skin cancers but the only way to know is by removing the lesion and having it evaluated by a Pathologist.

What causes moles?
Some people are born with moles and others can spontaneously appear over time. Sun exposure seems to play a role in the development of some moles. Some individual skin types are more likely to develop moles and skin cancers.

What are the warning signs about moles?
Moles can turn into skin cancers. Any changes in size or color are reason for suspicion. Itching and bleeding are also concerning signs. All moles should be evaluated by your physician and changing moles should be biopsied or removed.

How are moles removed?
Moles grow underneath the skin. Therefore removal should be surgical. This will result in a scar but the expectation is that the scar is less noticeable than the lesion itself. The lesion should be sent for pathologic evaluation.

Will insurance cover the removal of a mole?
You will need to check with your individual insurance provider as to whether the cost of mole removal is a covered benefit. Dr. Michael Sullivan does not accept any insurance. By choosing The Sullivan centre, all removal fees with the exception of pathology, would be paid to The Sullivan centre by the patient. We can provide the necessary codes so that you can submit the claim to your insurance company on your own.

How do I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you are considering, one of the most important factors in your satisfaction is the surgeon you choose. Make sure your surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This ensures that your surgeon is specialized in facial procedures. Make sure your procedure is done in an accredited facility. Ask how often your surgeon performs the procedure in question. The more you know about your surgeon and the procedure the more likely you will have a successful outcome.
