What is a silicone breast implant rupture?
A breast implant rupture is a break in the integrity of a silicone breast implant shell. This then causes the silicone to slowly leak from the implant. This typically occurs at a slow pace and over time the patient may notice that the implant in question is slowly getting smaller.
Is a silicone breast implant rupture dangerous?
Generally speaking, the rupture of a silicone breast implant is not dangerous. Today’s Silicone breast implants have a silicone rubber shell that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel. In 1999, a landmark report, undertaken by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that silicone implants do not cause major health problems such lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. And while no one can ignore the fact that silicone – and saline – breast implants may cause localized problems for some patients, numerous scientific studies over the years have shown that silicone gel-filled implants are both safe and effective for breast augmentation and reconstruction. In fact, silicone gel breast implants are widely used in 60 countries around the world including Europe, and now are available for use in the U.S. market.
In the past decade, a number of independent studies have examined whether silicone gel-filled breast implants are associated with connective tissue disease or cancer. The studies, including a report by the Institute of Medicine, have concluded there is no convincing evidence that breast implants are associated with either of these diseases
How is a silicone breast implant rupture fixed?
Using the original incision the old implant is removed along with any ribbons of silicone and a new silicone breast implant is replaced. Because our bodies naturally form capsules around implants, any silicone ribbons which have leaked will be contained in the capsule. This will allow your surgeon to safely remove any silicone that has escaped from the implant.
Is the recovery similar to breast augmentation surgery?
Because the muscle has already been divided with the original surgery, the recovery is not nearly as uncomfortable as the original breast augmentation surgery. Patients typically take a few days off to recover before returning to most normal activities.
Is silicone breast implant rupture surgery costly?
At the time of breast augmentation surgery, patients are given the option to purchase an extended warranty for the breast implant manufacturer. Patients who purchase the extended warranty plan are typically partially covered under this policy. Please check with your implant manufacturer to inquire about your individual warranty.
How should I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon if she is certified by The American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASPRS). Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
