What is submental (under the chin) Liposuction?
Submental liposuction is a procedure where a small cannula (about the size of a cocktail straw) and suction are used to remove excess fatty tissue located underneath the chin. Excess fat under the chin is very common and people may even inherit this condition. Often times this condition makes a person look unfairly overweight by obscuring the jawline.
How is submental liposuction performed?
Highlighting the jawline by submental liposuction may be done as an isolated procedure or in combination with a lower facelift or chin augmentation surgery. An inconspicuous incision just under the chin is made and liposuction is used to remove the excess fatty cells. This incision is virtually invisible as there is often a fold or crease at the location where the incision is placed.
Smartlipo submental liposuction is performed in the same manner but the smartlipo laser wand is used to melt the fat before it is suctioned away. The heat generated from the laser may also cause additional contraction of the skin.
How good are the results?
Patients can expect to see a marked improvement. The amount of improvement will vary slightly for each patient.
Will this correct jowling?
No. Submental liposuction will help with the double chin but it will not improve jowling. Often times, submental liposuction is used to enhance the results of a lower facelift. Upon consultation, Dr. Sullivan will determine if this procedure will best address your concerns.
How do I choose my surgeon?

Make sure your surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This ensures that your surgeon is specialized in facial procedures.
