What Can You Expect After A Tummy Tuck?
The research, preparation, consults and surgery is all complete. You got a tummy tuck! After your surgery, the Sullivan Centre team will provide you with all the post care instructions needed to facilitate a faster recovery. One of the first things we always say is to not plan to do any strenuous activities for the next 4-6 weeks following your surgery, including not lifting anything over 5-10 pounds. You will need to give your body a chance to heal and this will aid in your recovery. We always recommend doing deep breathing exercises for the first 48 hours. The breathing exercises help to fully expand your lungs to prevent pneumonia from developing after your anesthetic experience. “V-Shape” position will be a key position for you to sleep and sit in. To do this sit back at a 45 degree angle with your knees bent and pillows under them for support. Another way to get into “V-Shape” position is to use a recliner chair. Sleeping in this position will help ease the tension on your incision.
You will not be able to shower for at least four days following your surgery this will decrease your risk for introducing bacteria into the wound. You will also be unsteady on your feet from the effects of anesthesia and may require help from your caregiver or a friend for your first shower. Additionally, you should avoid taking a bath for two days after your drain is removed and no hot tub use for at least four weeks. Sitting in standing water before your incision heals can lead to an infection. If you obtain a temperature of 100F or more, please contact our office immediately. Flying is restricted after surgery for four weeks, but you are able to drive one week after surgery (as long as you are off all your pain medications). There is a lot to remember, but you should not feel alone. We have a staff of highly regarded RNs that will call to check in on your progress during the first few days of your surgery. We want all our patients to feel comfortable and to know that they are in the best hands. Dr. Christine Sullivan has over 30 years of experience as a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and will be happy to answer all your questions and concerns.
