CoolSculpting was approved by the FDA in 2010 and was initially used off label for fat reduction. Dr. Sullivan has been researching non-surgical fat reduction devices for years. She is not an early adaptor or into new technology. She wants to see proven results before she offers treatments to her valued patients. CoolSculpting has over 5 years of proven results and Dr. Sullivan sees it as a legitimate treatment option.
The History of CoolSculpting
The story of how CoolSculpting was developed is fascinating. Two physicians associated with the Wellman Center of Photomedicine (affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School.), Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Deiter Manstein were both familiar with a strange phenomenon known as ‘Popcicle panniculitus”. This term refers to the loss of cheek fat that occurs while sucking on a popsicle.
During the time of their research, there was also a documented case where a woman who rode naked in the cold weather on a horse, reported fat loss in her inner thighs. We have no idea why a woman was riding her horse, naked, in freezing temperatures but it sure makes a great story.
Both cases documented the result of fat loss due to cold temperatures and exposed body parts. From this correlation, Dr. Anderson and Dr. Manstein hypothesized that perhaps applying extreme cold to fat could result in fat loss as well.
Cryolipolysis was created through trial and error by Dr. Anderson and Dr. Manstein. They discovered that fat was actually much more sensitive to cold than nerves, skin, muscle and other body tissues. The doctors were able to pinpoint a precise temperature that served to maximize the destruction of fat, while leaving skin and nerves unharmed.
Fat cells that are exposed to cold temperatures become permanently injured and will gradually die. Over time, the body naturally removes these dying cells over a 2-3 month time span.
What you should know before considering CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting cannot and should not be used as a weight loss option however it can assist in contouring areas after weight loss.
Why have CoolSculpting?
- CoolSculpting is a safe and effective alternative to traditional liposuction for patients who desire a non-invasive approach to body contouring. CoolSculpting can contour specific areas that are not improved by diet and exercise. Often times, patients will eat all the right foods and spend hours in the gym. Diet and exercise will change your body, but sometimes there are areas that show minimal improvement with diet and exercise. CoolSculpting can help contour these areas resistant to diet and exercise.
- No anesthesia, no needles, no incisions. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure.
- CoolSculpting can add a measure of balance and symmetry to your body. This is especially true with patients who have an area of fat accumulation. CoolSculpting can help contour the areas of concern so that your body is more balanced.
- CoolSculpting can help you fit into your clothing better. From the stubborn areas not affected by diet and exercise, CoolSculpting can improve the shape of the body so that it looks better in clothing. The muffin top can be a thing of the past with a few CoolSculpting treatments.

How does CoolSculpting compare to traditional liposuction?
With advancements in modern technology and modern medicine, there are now many different treatment options for body contouring. After years of research and trialing different body contouring options, Dr. Sullivan is well trained in the various body contouring technology options available today.
Cool Sculpting is a remarkable new tool for non-invasive fat reduction. Dr. Sullivan has tested this device and believes that some her patients will benefit from a non-invasive liposuction method. Cool Sculpting delivers results for those patients who are not interested in traditional liposuction methods.
Dr. Sullivan will determine, during your consultation and examination which type of body contouring treatment would be the most beneficial in addressing your specific areas of concern. You will discuss all of your individual pre- and post-operative needs with our team of nurses during your comprehensive pre-op appointment.
CoolSculpting technology delivers a controlled cooling that will effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. These targeted fat cells are crystallized (frozen and die). Over time, your body will naturally process and eliminate these dead cells. The result is a more sculpted appearance.
A unique pad is placed on top of the skin and the CoolSculpting cup is attached to the pad. Patients initially feel a slight burning sensation similar to placing an ice cube on the skin. This lasts for 5-8 minutes and eventually the skin will become numb. Patients then relax for the 60 minute treatment. After the hour has passed our CoolSculpting Technologist will perform a massage on the area of treatment. Patients can proceed with their normal activities immediately following the treatment.
Is CoolSculpting safe?
The CoolSculpting device has been engineered to provide controlled and precise cooling at a consistent temperature for a period of time necessary to cause a natural death of the fat cells without damaging the surrounded skin, nerves, blood vessels, tissues, etc. This is what makes the treatment so safe.
What are the potential side effects of CoolSculpting?
Although every patient experience may be different, the most common side effects are bruising, temporary numbness of the treatment site, tenderness to the touch, cramping, itching and tingling. It is our experience that these side effects will resolve rather quickly but in rare cases they can persist for several weeks.
Am I a good candidate CoolSculpting?
If you are healthy, in relatively good shape, eat right, exercise, and have areas of your body that cannot be reduced with diet and exercise, and are interested in non-invasive treatments, you may be a good candidate for CoolSculpting.
CoolSculpting Post-Op Results
Patients are able to drive themselves to and from the CoolSculpting treatments and resume normal activities immediately following their treatment. Patients are not required to wear a compression garment following the treatment. You can resume your normal exercise routine immediately.
It may take several weeks for initial results. The full benefit from the treatment may take 3-4 months. Your CoolSculpting results will last as long as you maintain your weight and practice a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well and regular physical activity.
