Why have Liposuction?

  • Liposuction can contour specific areas that are not improved by diet and exercise. Often times patients will eat all the right foods and spend hours in the gym. Diet and exercise will change your body but sometimes there are areas that show minimal improvement with diet and exercise. Liposuction is a great option to help shape the “bulgy” areas that diet and exercise don’t.
  • Liposuction can add balance and symmetry to your body. This is especially true with patients who have a smaller top half with a larger bottom half or vice versa. One great example is if one considers their body type to be “pear shaped”. Liposuction can contour the areas of concern so that your body is balanced. The result is a nice balanced body shape.
  • Liposuction can help you to better fit into your clothing. From the stubborn areas not affected by diet and exercise, liposuction can improve the shape of the body so that it looks better in clothing. Many of our patients report that shopping for clothing is much easier following their liposuction procedure.

What you should know before considering Liposuction

Liposuction is best utilized when a person is close to their realistic weight, but has bulges that won’t go away. The liposuction procedure is not a weight loss tool but a method for contouring different areas of the body.

If you have any of these concerns, please contact us to schedule a consultation appointment with female plastic surgeon, Dr. Christine Sullivan. Dr. Christine Sullivan specializes in body contouring and breast surgery. During your consultation and examination appointment Dr. Christine Sullivan will encourage you to share your goals, ask questions about liposuction and liposuction recovery.

You will also be able to view before and after liposuction photos of Dr. Sullivan’s liposuction procedures. Dr. Sullivan will recommend an individual treatment plan that will address your concerns.

What are the different types of liposuction?

With advancements in modern technology and modern medicine, there are now many different liposuction treatment options. After years of research and trialing different liposuction options, Dr. Sullivan is well trained in the various liposuction technology options available today.

Ultrasonic Liposuction (Vaser) is among the most popular type of liposuction due to reliable results. Ultrasonic liposuction can used to treat nearly any area of the body

Cool Sculpting is one of the newer devices in the market today. Dr. Christine Sullivan has tested the CoolSculpt device and believes that some her patients will benefit from a non-invasive liposuction method. Cool Sculpting delivers results for those patients who are not interested in traditional liposuction methods.

Dr. Christine Sullivan will determine, during your consultation and examination appointment, which type of liposuction would be the most beneficial in addressing your specific areas of concern. You will discuss all of your individual pre- operative and post-operative needs with our team of Registered Nurses during your comprehensive pre-op appointment.

Vaser Liposuction Procedure

Vaser (Ultrasonic) Liposuction uses a special type of ultrasound technology designed to emulsify fat cells while conserving other tissues during a liposuction procedure. It is a safe, proven technique.

Dr. Sullivan first fills the areas of your body to be liposuctioned with a specialized saline solution that numbs the site. This solution also reduces bruising by shrinking the blood vessels in the treatment area. VASER® Liposuction consists of a small probe that transmits energy to the fat through the small surgical site.

This energy breaks up fatty tissue on contact while preserving the surrounding tissue. The liquefied fat cells are then removed using VASER® Liposuction’s gentle vacuum through a small incision. One benefit to Ultrasound technology is that it has been shown to produce tissue tightening in some patients.

Vaser Liposuction has also shown the ability to treat areas of the body with more dense fat. Only very small incisions are needed for liposuction procedures. These incision are very well hidden and are typically not visible with the naked eye after the healing process.

Am I a good candidate for Vaser Liposuction?

If you are healthy, in relatively good shape, eat right, exercise regularly, and have areas of your body that cannot be reduced with diet and exercise, you may be a candidate for liposuction. During your consultation Dr. Sullivan will recommend the best treatment option for you.

Liposuction is not a weight loss system. There are limits on the amounts of fatty tissue that can be safely removed from your body. VASER® Liposuction is used to sculpt and reduce specific areas of the body. After liposuction, you will notice that your clothing fits much better, even if the numbers on your scale don’t change.

Liposuction Post-Op Results

Depending on the extent of your liposuction, you may be able to return to work in a few days. You will need to wear a compression garment 24 hours a day for 4 weeks and during the night for one additional week. You can resume walking immediately, although it is usually 1 week after your liposuction treatment before resuming a vigorous exercise routine. Dr. Sullivan does ask that her patients refrain from flying for four weeks following the surgery.

It may take several months for your swelling to fully dissipate. As it does, your new contours will emerge. Your liposuction results will last as long as you maintain your weight and practice a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well and regular physical activity. The fat cells removed by any liposuction procedure are permanently removed but the remaining fat cells can go up and down in size with weight gain and / or weight loss.
